आज से लगभग 5000 साल पहले या ईसा पूर्व 2500 से 1500 ईसवी पूर्व एक सभ्यता थी जिसे हम सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता के नाम से जानते हैं. सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता को हड़प्पा सभ्यता भी कहते हैं. सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता या हड़प्पा सभ्यता की खोज रायबहादुर दयाराम साहनी ने की थी. सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता को कांस्य युगीन सभ्यता भी कहा जाता है. ऐसा माना जाता है कि सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता के मूल निवासी द्रविड़ थे. भारतीय भूभाग में सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता पूर्व के तरफ बढ़ने पर हिंडन नदी के किनारे उत्तर प्रदेश में आलमगीरपुर तक था , पश्चिम में Balochistan तक था, उत्तर में जम्मू कश्मीर में मानदा तक, दक्षिण में गोदावरी नदी के तट तक दायमा बाद जिला अहमदनगर महाराष्ट्र था. सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता एक नगरीय सभ्यता थी.
